Hello, I'm Adriana Martinez, an artist and surface pattern designer from Los Angeles, California and the creator of Sophia Bleue Design.

Originally from Sao Paulo, Brazil, and of European descent with roots in Italy, Austria, Portugal, and Spain, I developed an early appreciation for diversity, inclusivity, and the beauty and richness of the many cultural traditions found there.

Adding to that, at age 21, I embarked on a new chapter of my life, moving to the United States, where I continued to learn, grown, and nurture my passions while raising a family.

Creativity and art have always been a part of my life since I was a child, leading me to experiment with a variety of mediums and interests over the years, including dancing, pottery, dark room black and white photography, jewelry making, sewing, furniture refinishing, gardening, crochet, and crafting great birthday parties for my kids.

I graduated from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandise in Los Angeles, majoring in Graphic Design. I authored and illustrated a children’s book, and gained valuable experience in the retail industry as a buyer and merchandiser for a beautiful home, garden, and gift boutique for 8 years. With this experience I now have a unique view and understanding of the retail process from concept to sales.

During the pandemic, when life slowed down, I rediscovered my passion for pattern design which brings together my love for art and design, interior design, history, and nature. These elements now fuel my work every day and I constantly find inspiration everywhere!

Process

The design process always begins with gathering inspiration from the world around me, and from my ever growing collection of interior design magazines and books.

From pencil, paint, or from my iPad in Procreate, every design is always done by hand - never AI. I like to experiment with different layouts and flow for each pattern. All drawings get refined before being digitized and recolored for printing.

Style

My personal style is collected and classic, combining timeless design with a touch of contemporary flair. I admire English style because it effortlessly blends patterns, colors, and textures, creating rooms that are both sophisticated and comfortable—a pattern designer's dream! I also love French influences, including its elegant and delicate decorative flair in patterns, furnishings, and architecture, which instantly adds a sense of grandeur to any space.

Both styles are timeless and romanticize the past by mixing old and new, treasured objects, and honor the history that connects us to the past and those who came before us.

I am incredibly thankful for the opportunity to pursue something that I find so fulfilling. I believe that beauty feeds the soul and that the things we surround ourselves with tell our story. I wish to bring you the same joy and that my work becomes a cherished chapter of your unique journey.

With love,

Adriana
